Coach vs Mentor

The FACT Behind the Boom in Coaching:
Coach mentor

What’s the difference between a mentor and a coach? People will often use these words interchangeably, but they truly are not the same. Neither one is better than the other for they both have their purpose. Before you seek a mentor or a coach, you need to determine what your goal is and what outcome you are looking for.

A coach:

• Focuses on the performance with a specific agenda
• Is often "assigned" to you through your position in a company
• Their influence is determined by the position they hold
• Is very task oriented
• Tells you what you need to do
• Rewards are in teamwork and performance
You are looking for a coach if you want someone to show you exactly what to do and how to do it.

A mentor:

• Focuses on the individual without a specific predetermined agenda
• Is most frequently selected by the individual seeking a mentor
• Their influence is determined by the value you place on them
• Provide you with the environment for learning, finding better ways for yourself, and affirmations
• Guides and assists you in your personal growth
• Offers support, advise, and suggestions
• Asks you questions so you may dig deeper into yourself
• Rewards are in your LIFE
You are looking for a mentor if you want someone to help you to develop yourself, both personally and professionally.
Many times, the same person will be both your coach and mentor. There is a skill needed to be able to perform these dual roles but it can be done. One thing to note is that not all great coaches are good mentors. Most often, however, great mentors are also great coaches.
